Lumber Total Disc Replacement
Prodisc L (PDL)
Lower back pain from degenerative disc disease (DDD) can interfere with nearly every aspect of daily life. The Prodisc L Total Disc Replacement offers an advanced surgical option for people who have not found relief through non-surgical treatments. Unlike traditional spinal fusion, this procedure is designed to maintain motion in the spine while providing significant pain relief.

Why Prodisc L?
What Is Prodisc L?
Prodisc L is an FDA-approved artificial disc replacement designed for the lower spine, specifically between the L3 and S1 vertebrae. It is the only total disc replacement device in the United States approved for use at two levels. The implant consists of two metal endplates and a plastic inlay that work together to mimic the natural motion of a healthy disc.
Who Is a Candidate?
Candidates for Prodisc L typically have degenerative disc disease confirmed by imaging such as X-ray, MRI, or CT. They have usually tried at least six months of treatments like medication, physical therapy, or injections without lasting relief. Prodisc L is intended for adults whose bones are fully developed and who have disc problems at one or two levels in the lower back.
Controlled And Guided Motion
Who Should Not Receive Prodisc L?
This procedure is not suitable for everyone. It is not recommended for patients with advanced osteoporosis or weakened bones, spinal stenosis, severe arthritis in the facet joints, prior fusion surgery, or known allergies to metals used in the implant. It is also not advised for those with active infections, systemic illnesses, or significant spinal deformities. Your neurosurgeon will evaluate your individual case to determine if this procedure is right for you.
Benefits of Prodisc L Surgery
In clinical studies, patients who received the Prodisc L replacement reported meaningful improvements in pain and mobility. Many were able to reduce or eliminate the use of narcotic pain medications and return more quickly to work, family, and recreational activities. Importantly, Prodisc L is designed to preserve motion in the lower spine, unlike spinal fusion, which typically limits flexibility.

What to Expect
Before surgery, your doctor will review your medical history, evaluate your imaging, and discuss the risks and benefits of the procedure. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia, usually through an incision in the abdomen. The damaged disc is removed and replaced with the Prodisc L implant. Patients generally stay in the hospital for about three to four days. After discharge, you will follow a rehabilitation plan and gradually return to normal activities.
You should contact your doctor right away if you experience a fever, drainage from your incision, new or worsening back or leg pain, numbness, weakness, or difficulty with urination or breathing.
Risks and Considerations
As with any surgery, there are potential risks, including infection, nerve or blood vessel injury, implant movement or loosening, and the possibility that symptoms may not improve. Some patients may require additional surgery. Your surgeon will review all risks with you in detail so you can make an informed decision.
Is Prodisc L Right for You?
Both spinal fusion and disc replacement are options for treating degenerative disc disease. If you are looking for a treatment that relieves pain while preserving spinal motion, Prodisc L may be a strong option.
